Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced plans to build housing for residents displaced by recent floods across the state. The initiative aims to provide shelter and support for families affected by the disaster.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, this was revealed during the state’s weekly Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, as stated by Sunusi Bataure, the governor’s media aide, in a statement released Thursday.
Governor Yusuf emphasized that the housing project would ease the burden on flood victims.
“The provision of homes will help alleviate the suffering of those who have lost their houses to the floods, offering them a secure place to live,” he said.
In addition to the housing initiative, the government is partnering with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation to provide food and essential items to affected communities.
Meanwhile, in a significant push to improve education in Kano, Governor Yusuf also announced the distribution of chairs and desks to 220,000 students in basic and post-basic schools during the first phase of the program.
“We are committed to ensuring that every student has access to a conducive learning environment,” the governor remarked, expressing satisfaction with the smooth resumption of schools for the 2024/2025 academic session.
As part of the government’s Emergency Declaration on Education, all Primary 1 pupils in the state will receive free school uniforms.
“This move is aimed at promoting school attendance and reducing the financial burden on parents,” Yusuf added.
He called on stakeholders to collaborate in realizing the state’s educational objectives, saying, “Together, we can achieve the goals we’ve set to improve education in Kano.”
The governor also promised to rehabilitate all school infrastructure across the state as part of his administration’s broader commitment to the education sector.
