A 66-year-old Assistant Chief Nursing Officer at Babcock University Teaching Hospital, Mrs. Elizabeth Uruakpa has been released by her abductors.
Uruakpa, who was kidnapped last Thursday, was reportedly freed and dropped at the university gate on Thursday, a week after her abduction.
The gunmen who kidnapped Uruakpa had initially demanded a ransom of N50 million. It remains unclear how much, if any, ransom was paid before her release.
The university’s Director of Communication and Marketing, Dr. Joshua Suleiman confirmed the news, stating, “I’ve heard that she has been released and dropped at the university gate, though I haven’t personally seen her.”
Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, also confirmed Uruakpa’s release in a statement shared via her X (formerly Twitter) handle. “Elizabeth Uruakpa, a nurse at Babcock University Teaching Hospital, has been released and is currently receiving medical treatment. An investigation into the incident is ongoing,” Odutola wrote.
Uruakpa was abducted last Thursday while returning from a church service. Masked gunmen ambushed her at the entrance of her home near Ilisan Market, dragging her into their vehicle before fleeing the scene.
