The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed all officers of the Nigeria Police Force to wear black armbands for a seven-day mourning period to pay tribute to the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja.
In a statement released on Thursday by Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi, the directive was described as a mark of respect for Lagbaja, who passed away on Tuesday night at the age of 56 after a prolonged illness.
Adejobi stated, “The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has instructed officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to wear black bands for the duration of the seven-day mourning period. This directive is in recognition of the late General’s gallantry, dedication, and passion in combating insurgency and violent crime in Nigeria.”
Lagbaja, appointed by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023, was remembered for his courage and leadership in the fight against terrorism and crime.
“Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja was a remarkable leader who deserves to be honoured by all means possible. May his soul rest in peace,” added Adejobi.
The statement also followed President Tinubu’s order on Wednesday that national flags be flown at half-mast nationwide for seven days in memory of the late army chief.
This directive was issued by the president’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, to formally announce Lagbaja’s passing and express the nation’s condolences.
