Lagos State officials have intensified efforts to curb drunk driving by impounding alcoholic beverages sold by street traders at Olupese Terminal Park and Oshodi-Bolade Garages.
The enforcement action, carried out on Tuesday by the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, aims to address the rising number of road accidents linked to alcohol consumption by commercial drivers.
In a statement posted on X.com, Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, explained the motivation behind the crackdown.
“As part of the state government’s concerted efforts to curb the trend of alcohol consumption among commercial drivers across various parks and garages, which has been identified as a primary trigger for motor accidents, the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps, popularly known as KAI, conducted a raid at Olupese Terminal Park and Oshodi-Bolade Garages,” Wahab said.
During the operation, the Corps impounded a significant quantity of alcoholic beverages from the street traders.
The Corps Marshal, Major Olaniyi Cole (retd.), warned street traders and hawkers to cease their illegal activities, emphasizing that the agency will continue its crackdown on street trading and other unauthorized commercial activities.
“The agency remains resolute in its war against street trading and the display of wares for sale in traffic, on walkways, setbacks, lay-bys, gutter slabs, road verges, and medians. Defaulters will face stiff penalties,” Cole stated.
The Lagos State Government has been increasing its efforts to combat street trading, demolishing illegal structures and removing roadside traders in various operations across the state.
