The Lagos State Government has warned teachers and schools against conducting extra lessons after official closing hours, stating that the extra hour is meant for extra-curricular activities.
According to the Nation, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, made this announcement while inaugurating a newly donated block of classrooms and furniture at Amuwo-Odofin Junior High School Complex.
Alli-Balogun emphasized the importance of extra-curricular activities, such as social clubs and organizations, for students’ rounded development.
He threatened to take decisive action against teachers who fail to carry out their duties and instead use the first lesson for personal gain.
Addressing the school principal, the Commissioner said: “If you have shortage of teachers, kindly let us know, so that we can deploy more teachers to this school for it to serve the purpose for which it was built.”
The commissioner praised Grimaldi Group and Ports & Terminal Multiservices Ltd. for their donation, which has transformed the school and added value to education in the state.
He assured that the state would maintain the facilities and deploy more teachers if needed.
PTML Managing Director, Ascanio Russo, highlighted the company’s commitment to Nigeria’s development, extending beyond physical infrastructure to nurturing young minds.
The donated projects include a 502-meter long access road and drainage system, significantly improving accessibility and environmental sustainability.
The Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Chairman, Valentine Buraimoh, acknowledged the power of partnership and the government’s willingness to collaborate with willing partners to advance development.
