The Lagos State Government as part of its effort to solve building collapse in the state, has engaged the services of industry experts and professionals.
According to The PUNCH, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Tayo Bamgbose-Martins, stated at a meeting with professionals that the state developed the Certified Accreditors Programme and the Certificate of Structural Integrity Programme to involve private professionals in building approval and regulatory processes to improve the safety of lives and property.
The commissioner, according to a state release, also promised a gradual rollout of the twin plan, with the CAP going live first.
The statement read in part, “The commissioner added that the other complementary initiative, the Certificate of Structural Integrity Programme, would come up later to address the challenge of distressed buildings by ensuring that all existing buildings go through periodic structural integrity tests.
“He stated that the notion of building rights was a collective responsibility in which all stakeholders must play their roles, adding that publicity and advocacy components had been deliberately built into the programmes to ensure acceptability and sustainability.
“The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Physical Planning, Dokun Roberts, and a structural engineer, Aileme Unuigbe, made presentations on the CAP and CSIP, respectively.”
