A Lagos monarch, the Aro Oba of Ikate/Elegushi, Chief Olalekan Bakare, has distributed gas cylinders to members of his community during the ‘Trash for Gas’ program in Ikate/Elegushi, Lagos.
Over 200 families in the Ikate/Elegushi region of Lagos State benefited from the ‘Trash for Gas’ initiative on Sunday, led by the Oba Saheed Elegushi Foundation, focusing on environmental sustainability.
In collaboration with Smart Gas, the initiative aims to foster environmental cleanliness and a sustainable society.
Dr. Yinka Opeke, CEO of Smart Gas, highlighted that the campaign’s objective is to encourage the use of cooking gas as a safer alternative to kerosene, firewood, and charcoal while addressing the beneficiaries.
“We are educating you on the importance of living in a cleaner and healthier environment.
“The use of firewood and charcoal for cooking not only impacts our environment negatively due to the emissions but also your health because of the smoke inhaled mostly by women and children.
“We pitched this campaign to the Oba and he has deemed it fit to bring it to your doorsteps and that is why, today, he has funded these cylinders.
“We will be exchanging your trash for our gas cylinders, thereby leaving you with a healthier and cleaner neighbourhood.
“I implore you to please make good use of these cylinders,” Opeke said.
Chief Olalekan Bakare, the Aro Oba of Ikate/Elegushi, emphasized his commitment to addressing climate change concerns within his domain.
He highlighted that the primary goal of the initiative is to foster a cleaner and healthier environment by emphasizing the importance of sanitation within the community.
“Cooking with wood is not healthy again, it is not the way forward. It is cleaner cooking with gas.
“Oba Elegushi will continue to support anything for a sustainable economy and we” ‘ll continue to campaign about the importance of keeping the environment clean,” he said.
