The Lagos State Government has issued a warning about the potential collapse of a building at Mopol 20 Barracks in Onigbongbo, Ikeja.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency is set to initiate an emergency evacuation at the old Block 3 section of the barracks to avert disaster.
According to The PUNCH, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, revealed that the agency’s response team conducted an assessment of the structure and found parts of it to be dangerously unstable.
“The findings indicate that the building and adjacent structures must be evacuated immediately to prevent any potential loss of life or property. We are implementing a response plan that includes a thorough assessment, a safe and orderly evacuation, and controlled demolition of the affected area,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
He further emphasized that the action is being taken under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to prevent a potential tragedy.
“This preemptive demolition is necessary due to the hazardous condition of the building and the risk of secondary incidents if left unchecked,” he added.
Oke-Osanyintolu also appealed for calm among residents in the vicinity and urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation about the situation on social media.
He assured that the situation is being closely monitored and managed by the relevant authorities.
In a related development, the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, had earlier announced in July that the police, in collaboration with the Lagos State Government, are undergoing comprehensive renovations of several police barracks in the state.
