A lecturer at the University of Lagos, Akoka, simply identified as Dr. Kadiri, has been accused of rape by a female student (name withheld) of the institution.
According to The Punch, the student stated that the incident happened when she went to the professor’s office to discuss some difficulties with her grades.
Also a non-profit organisation where the victim reported the incident, stated that the lecturer allegedly raped the undergraduate student on August 16, 2023, rather than addressing her concerns about her grades.
It was gathered that the incident was reported to the state police command’s Gender Unit, and the state chief of police, Idowu Owohunwa, filed an arrest warrant for the professor through the state high court and notified the university’s vice chancellor.
The incident has also been confirmed by the state police public relations officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, who stated, “He is to appear in court in the coming days.”
Also reacting to the incident, the spokesperson for UNILAG, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, said that the university was aware of an investigation involving an employee of the university.
She said, “UNILAG Management, on August 28, received a letter from the Nigeria Police Force, inviting an employee of the university for questioning. The employee was immediately informed of the development and advised to comply.
“On August 29, the employee complied. While we are not yet privy to the full details of the incident that led to the arrest of the employee, we are fully aware that the investigation is ongoing and we are cooperating with security agencies to ensure that the matter is resolved in the interest of justice.”
