The Lagos State Government has announced plans to incorporate mini and midi buses, commonly known as “Korope” and “Danfo,” operating along the Lekki-Ajah corridor into its Bus Reform Initiative.
This update was revealed in a statement issued by Mr. Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser on Transportation to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The statement, released on Thursday in Lagos, was signed by the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Bolanle Ogunlola.
According to Giwa, the initiative is currently in the planning phase.
“The documentation process for bus operators interested in the scheme is ongoing, with 10 operators having submitted letters of intent to the state Ministry of Transportation, of which six have already been confirmed.
“All participating buses will undergo physical verification by the Vehicle Inspection Service and Motor Vehicle Administration Agency to ensure their roadworthiness and proper documentation.
“Once verified, the buses will be branded in the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority colours and equipped with validators,” Giwa stated.
He also noted that a framework is being developed to incorporate union dues deductions into an e-ticketing system while addressing the issue of hoodlums extorting money from transport operators.
The initiative will be piloted for three months before being fully rolled out.
The full implementation of this reform, according to Giwa, will result in the restriction of mini buses from operating on the Lekki-Ajah Expressway. Instead, these buses will serve inner roads and local communities.
