A woman identified as, Olufunmilayo Brioluwa, has been arrested and remanded for allegedly assaulting a uniformed police officer in Lagos.
Recall that, Afrobeats singer, Seun Kuti, was also arrested and arraigned earlier in the week for assaulting a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.
In a press release on Tuesday, the Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, shared a photo of the incident.
He wrote, “Somewhere in Ogombo yesterday, she assaulted a police officer. She was arraigned today and has been remanded to the Kirikiri correctional facility till June 6 when the case come up again in court.”
Brioluwa risks three years imprisonment according to section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act, if found guilty of assault against the yet-to-be-named police officer.
Section 98 of the Nigerian Police Act of 2020 provides as follows: “A person who assaults, obstructs or resists a police officer in the discharge of his duty, or aids or incites any other person to assault, obstruct or resist a police officer or other person aiding or assisting the police officer in the discharge of his duty, commits an offence and is liable on conviction.”
Assault of police officers is a felony punishable with at least six months jail term. Even resisting arrest or obstructing a police officer from doing his duty is as well an offence punishable by law.
