The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has seized 40 vehicles, comprising 25 commercial and 15 private, due to their involvement in operating illegal garages and causing road blockages in the Oyingbo, Ijora, and Idumota areas.
This action was announced in a statement by LASTMA on its X on Friday.
The initiative aims to restore order and ensure smooth traffic flow.
The statement said the enforcement team, led by Mr. Kayode Odunuga and under the guidance of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, targeted illegal garages that had been consistently causing traffic congestion and inconvenience for residents and commuters.
Giwa explained that this operation is part of a larger effort to improve the city’s transportation network and maintain law and order on the roads.
He stated, “Illegal garages have been a significant challenge in our quest to maintain a seamless traffic flow in Lagos. These impoundments send a strong message to all offenders that the state will not tolerate activities that disrupt public order and endanger the lives of our citizens.”
“Our goal is to create a safe and orderly environment for all road users and this action is a crucial step in that direction,” he added.
Oyingbo, Ijora, and Idumota, the areas targeted by this operation, are well-known hotspots for traffic jams caused by unauthorized parking and makeshift garages.
The statement further noted that these illegal garages and unauthorized parking not only hinder the free movement of vehicles but also pose safety risks to pedestrians.
LASTMA’s intervention aims to eliminate these hazards, alleviate congestion, and enhance traffic flow in these regions.
Residents and business owners have welcomed the government’s move, recognizing the significant benefits it will bring to their daily lives.
LASTMA has assured the public that this operation will continue and will be extended to other parts of the city where illegal garages and related activities are common.
Giwa urged all vehicle owners and operators to comply with the state’s traffic regulations and cooperate with authorities to avoid penalties.
He emphasized that the government’s primary objective is to create a better and more livable Lagos for everyone. He also encouraged motorists to take responsibility for the roads and promptly inform LASTMA of any broken down or abandoned trailers.
