A member of the House of Representatives, Akinlayo Kolawole, has urged state governors who have not yet implemented the new minimum wage to take immediate action in order to alleviate the hardships faced by citizens.
In a statement released in Ado Ekiti on Friday, Kolawole expressed his appreciation for Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, for signing into law the implementation of a N70,000 minimum wage for state workers, describing the move as a “commendable gesture” that reflects the governor’s commitment to workers’ welfare.
Representing Ekiti North Federal Constituency II, Kolawole emphasized the urgent need for other state governors to follow Ekiti’s lead and implement the new wage, while also prioritizing policies and programs that serve the interests of the people.
He pointed out the economic challenges currently facing the country, particularly the sharp rise in food prices and essential commodities, making the implementation of the new wage not just a legal requirement, but a crucial response to the country’s pressing economic conditions.
“Nigerian workers need to be encouraged with reasonable salaries and allowances to ensure that they continue delivering quality service to the citizens,” Kolawole said. “Civil service remains the backbone of government structure, and it is only by addressing the welfare of workers that the economy can be strengthened, helping to fight corruption and promote even distribution of resources.”
The lawmaker also noted that the former N30,000 minimum wage had become outdated due to inflation and the skyrocketing costs of living, particularly with rising transportation, building materials, and service charges.
He commended the workers in Ekiti for their support and understanding and called on them to remain dedicated to the successful implementation of the Oyebanji administration’s policies and programs.
Kolawole further praised Oyebanji for honouring his campaign promise to prioritize workers’ welfare, highlighting the ongoing infrastructural development projects across the state.
He urged Ekiti residents to show appreciation for the governor’s efforts by offering their continued support and prayers for the progress of the state.
The federal lawmaker concluded by urging governors across Nigeria, regardless of political party affiliation, to work together in supporting President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to improve the lives of citizens.
“The President cannot do it alone. It is essential for all hands to be on deck to implement impactful policies and initiatives that will make life more bearable for the people,” Kolawole stated.
