Members of the Nigerian House of Representatives has kicked against the failure of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele to appear before the house.
Emefiele had been called before the House to discuss the most recent apex bank policy, which among other things places restrictions on cash withdrawals from deposit money banks and other financial institutions.
Emefiele was scheduled to testify before the House about the policy last week Thursday but he did not show up.
The Deputy Governor, Corporate Services, CBN, Edward Adamu, in a communication to the House, told the lawmakers that Emefiele was part of the entourage of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on an official trip to the United States.
The Deputy Speaker of the House, Ahmed Wase, who read the letter to members at the start of plenary on Thursday, said the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, had rescheduled Emefiele’s appearance for Tuesday.
However, the CBN wrote the House again, stating that Emefiele was still on official duty.
Gbajabiamila stated that the lawmakers would be interested in learning about the two-week official assignment.
The Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu, stated that if the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria does not appear before the House on Thursday, when lawmakers are scheduled to go on Christmas and New Year’s break, their resolution to suspend the policy remains in effect.
