Leicester City have secured their promotion to the Premier League following Leeds United’s defeat by Queens Park Rangers.
The 4-0 loss for Leeds at Loftus Road means Daniel Farke’s Leicester City now sit four points clear at the top of the Championship table with only one game remaining.
The Foxes are poised to reach an impressive 100 points on their journey back to the top flight, bouncing back after their relegation last season.
Leicester can clinch the Championship title on Monday with a win against Preston, provided third-placed Ipswich fail to beat Hull City on Saturday.
Ipswich could also secure promotion to the Premier League next season if they manage to pick up five points from their remaining three matches.
Leicester City’s promotion campaign had its ups and downs earlier this season, with a notable loss of form. However, they managed to recover and secure their return to the Premier League.
A 5-0 victory over Southampton on Tuesday marked back-to-back wins for Leicester, who had seemed to be struggling towards automatic promotion.
At one point in mid-February, Leicester City seemed destined for the title and a return to the top flight, boasting a 12-point lead at the summit with a comfortable 14-point gap to third place.
The team was likened to an “Marescalator,” a term referencing their Italian boss Enzo Maresca, suggesting they were a smooth-passing, possession-hungry machine headed straight for promotion.
However, a string of four losses and just one win in six matches, including a significant defeat by Leeds, who were 17 points behind Leicester at the start of January, turned the situation into a fierce four-way battle for the top-two finish, involving Leeds, Ipswich, and Southampton.
Except for two days between September 23 and March 17, Leicester had maintained their position at the top of the table. They were overtaken by Leeds, and then Ipswich surged ahead, pushing Leicester out of the automatic promotion spots by the end of March.
Yet, as Leicester stumbled, their rivals also dropped crucial points, giving the Foxes an opportunity to regroup and secure their return to the top flight.
