German champions Bayer Leverkusen secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Augsburg on Saturday, extending their winning streak to four consecutive Bundesliga matches and climbing to second in the league standings.
Riding high after their 1-0 Champions League triumph against Inter Milan midweek, Leverkusen showcased their dominance with a composed first-half performance.
Martin Terrier opened the scoring in the 14th minute, converting a close-range opportunity to give Leverkusen an early lead.
While the visitors briefly allowed Augsburg more freedom to attack, Florian Wirtz restored control with a precise low shot in the 40th minute, doubling the advantage.
Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso praised his team’s performance, saying, “I am very satisfied with the game and especially with the way we played. We were very solid, had good control and that is not easy. That’s the way we want to play in away matches.”
The win also extended Leverkusen’s remarkable unbeaten streak on the road in the Bundesliga to 24 matches, second only to Bayern Munich’s record.
Reflecting on the team’s success, Alonso emphasized the importance of focusing on the journey rather than the standings.
“This win is good for us. The next match, that is our only focus. The table in December is not something that is so important. More important is the way we played. For anything else, it is still too early,” he noted.
Leverkusen now sit on 29 points, trailing league leaders Bayern Munich by four, after Bayern suffered their first Bundesliga loss of the season, falling 2-1 to Mainz 05.
