Florian Wirtz once again played a pivotal role in Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-1 victory over Union Berlin in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso had initially left his star player on the bench, but with the score tied 1-1, Wirtz entered the game in the 60th minute.
The 21-year-old immediately made an impact, delivering a precise cross for Patrik Schick, who scored the decisive goal with his chest in the 71st minute.
This marked Wirtz’s third consecutive Bundesliga match in which he provided an assist for a goal.
Meanwhile, Leipzig’s struggles continued as they suffered a humiliating 5-1 loss to Wolfsburg at home, extending their winless streak to five games across all competitions.
The defeat puts coach Marco Rose’s position at the energy drink-backed club under serious threat.
In other matches, Ermedin Demirović’s two equalizers earned Stuttgart a 2-2 draw at Werder Bremen, Freiburg triumphed 3-1 over Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Augsburg secured a 1-0 victory against bottom-placed Bochum.
Later in the day, Borussia Dortmund was set to host league leaders Bayern Munich in the much-anticipated “der Klassiker.”
