Liverpool are on the verge of securing two key players, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, to fresh two-year deals, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
The move is a major step toward stabilizing the squad as both players were approaching the end of their current contracts.
This development brings clarity to the futures of two pillars of the team and helps soften the potential blow of losing Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is reportedly poised to join Real Madrid on a free transfer after the season.
Salah, now 32, is not expected to take a pay cut despite concerns initially raised due to his age.
As reported by The Times’ Paul Joyce, the Egyptian forward has been pushing for a long-term commitment as he looks to extend his impressive eight-year tenure at Anfield.
Van Dijk, meanwhile, offered a positive update after Liverpool’s narrow 3-2 defeat to Fulham on Sunday, saying that discussions over a new contract were moving forward.
“I love the club. I love the fans, and they were there for us again,” said the Dutch center-back.
Contract uncertainty surrounding Salah, Van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold had lingered throughout the season, even as Liverpool unexpectedly found themselves in the Premier League title race.
New head coach, Arne Slot, consistently reiterated his belief that Salah would remain part of his plans.
Back in November, Salah voiced his displeasure about the lack of a contract offer, admitting he felt “more out than in” and that the decision wasn’t his to make.
During that time, speculation about a big-money move to Saudi Arabia intensified, with Al-Hilal reportedly identifying him as a successor to Neymar.
Liverpool had turned down a £150-million offer from the Saudi side in September 2023.
Salah’s outstanding campaign—scoring 32 goals and providing 22 assists across all competitions, has made it virtually impossible for the Reds to consider letting him go for nothing.
With 243 goals since arriving in 2017, he’s set to further build on his legendary status at the club.
