In contrast to media rumours, Manchester United has stated that no decision has been taken by the organisation about Mason Greenwood’s future.
The club provided an update on the 21-year-old on Wednesday, noting that after the charges against the player were dismissed in February 2023, it thoroughly investigated the accusations levelled against him.
The fact-finding portion of the club’s inquiry into Greenwood is now complete, according to Manchester United, and they are in the final stages of making a decision about his future.
However, it made note that the Chief Executive Officer is ultimately responsible for making the choice.
The decision will be conveyed and explained to the club’s internal and external stakeholders after it is made, it was noted.
“This has been a difficult case for everyone associated with Manchester United, and we understand the strong opinions it has provoked based on the partial evidence in the public domain.
“We ask for patience as we work through the final stages of this carefully considered process, the club’s statement read partly.
Recall that in February, British police said that all allegations against Greenwood had been dropped, including attempted rape and violence.
The Crown Prosecution Service stated that the decision to drop all charges against the 21-year-old was influenced by the absence of crucial witnesses and the discovery of fresh evidence.
Given the “significant media coverage” of this case, Greater Manchester Police felt it was “only fair” to disclose that Greenwood, who was detained in January of 2018, would no longer face criminal charges.
