Manchester United have reached an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain for the transfer of Uruguayan midfielder Manuel Ugarte, settling on a fee of €50 million, £42.29 million.
The deal also includes potential additional payments of up to €10 million, £8.46 million.
Ugarte is expected to fly to Manchester for a medical as early as Tuesday. This transfer is unfolding alongside midfielder Scott McTominay’s proposed €30 million, £25.37 million. move to Napoli.
Throughout the summer, Ugarte has been linked with a move to United, and he is now set to sign with the Old Trafford club just a year after joining PSG from Sporting Lisbon for a reported €60 million.
The 23-year-old Uruguayan played a significant role for PSG under Luis Enrique, making 37 appearances, including 25 in Ligue 1, as the team clinched their 12th Ligue 1 title.
Additionally, PSG has secured a 10% sell-on clause for Ugarte, and both clubs have privately expressed satisfaction with the terms of the deal.
The completion of Ugarte’s transfer is dependent on McTominay finalizing his move to Napoli, but there is confidence within Old Trafford that this transfer will proceed smoothly.
McTominay is scheduled to travel to Italy on Tuesday for a medical. Sources within Manchester United acknowledge that the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability regulations encourage the sale of home-grown players.
Although manager Erik ten Hag could not assure McTominay a regular starting position, the club first entertained offers for the 27-year-old a year ago.
Despite this, McTominay played a significant role last season, making 32 Premier League appearances and scoring seven goals for United.
He also started in the FA Cup final victory against Manchester City.
United insiders have revealed that Ugarte was identified early in the transfer window as a target, and the club remained patient during negotiations for a player who had been named to the Copa America team of the tournament following Uruguay’s impressive run to the final, where they eventually fell to Argentina.
If the transfer is finalized as expected, Ugarte will become Manchester United’s fifth signing of the summer, pushing their total spending for the transfer window to over £190 million.
Since Erik ten Hag’s appointment in 2022, United has invested nearly £600 million in new players.
