Manchester United’s pursuit of Jarrad Branthwaite seems to be ‘all but over’ following Aston Villa’s agreement on a big-money move for Everton star Amadou Onana.
United had been targeting the England international earlier this summer and even had a bid for the talented defender turned down by Everton.
However, their chances of securing Branthwaite at a reduced price now appear slim, with Everton expected to secure a substantial fee for midfielder Onana.
According to The Athletic, Villa is nearing a deal for the Belgian ace, expected to be in the region of £50 million.
Former Man Utd player Patrice Evra reacts to receiving a 12-month prison sentence.
It is reported that personal terms between Villa and Onana – who has previously been linked with a move to Old Trafford – have been agreed as part of a long-term contract at Villa Park.
As a result, Everton’s PSR concerns have been alleviated – at least temporarily – with the expectation that Branthwaite will remain at Goodison Park next season.
This does not mean a summer move for Branthwaite is completely ruled out, as Everton is said to be open to selling if a suitable offer comes in.
The Merseyside club is believed to be using the transfers of Josko Gvardiol (£78 million – 2023) and Harry Maguire (£80 million – 2018) as benchmarks for the 22-year-old’s sale.
United’s two offers this summer, including a recent £45 million bid, fall short of this valuation.
Instead, United has reportedly shifted focus to French starlet Leny Yoro, with a bid worth around £42 million ‘accepted’ earlier this week.
However, complications arise with the Yoro move as Real Madrid is reportedly keen on the teenage sensation.
Yoro’s preference is believed to be the Spanish capital, even though his club, Lille OSC, is pushing for a move to United instead.
