An American singer and songwriter, Mariah Carey, has reportedly raked over $6 millions annually from holiday songs through streaming which has increasingly dominated music market.
She has been cashing in on Christmas for decades which made her current net worth skyrocketed to the tune of over $350 million.
Her song, ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ generated about $6.16 million in master recording and publishing revenue in 2021 based on 94,000 downloads and 823 million streams.
Carey could make about $1.55 million in 2021 from the master recording revenue, according to Billboard, and as one of the song’s two writers, her share of the publishing revenue would be about $830,000 if she and her co-writer each wrote 50% of the song, though the percent each writer wrote may vary.
Carey’s label, Sony Music, earns a big payday too, Billboard estimated Sony earned about $2.95 million from the song’s 2021 performance.
Brenda Lee’s ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’, which finally topped the Hot 100 for the first time in 2023, after years of ranking second to Carey—generated about $4 million in revenue in 2022, Billboard estimated.
According to Billboard, Lee’s song, which recorded s huge success in 2023, is on the verge to be more profitable than ever. The song has sold 967,000 consumption units this year to date, up from 807,000 at this point last year.
A report from the New York Post estimated that the record producer makes around $3 million every year from the song. In 2021 it was claimed that Carey has raked in more than $60 million from ‘All I Want For Christmas is You’ and she continues to profit from the track.
Carey topped the Hot 100 every holiday season in 2019, she released a new music video to celebrate the song’s 25th anniversary and promoted her Christmas music on social media every year.
She also went on holiday tours in 2022 and 2023 to promote ‘Santa Tell Me, where she moved closer to Hot 100’s top ten since its 2014 release.
Leigh at the age, relegated Carey to number two for two straight weeks in 2023 with her song ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’.
The song, ‘Rockin Around the Christmas Tree finally topping the Billboard Hot 100 65 year after the song’s release.
Leigh broke many chart records when her song top the chart last week. She became the oldest person to ever reign atop the chart and ‘Rockin Around the Christmas Tree’ is oldest song to hit number one.
Leigh released the song first ever video and joined Tik Tok, where she posted the video promoting the song and reflected on its 65-year legacy.
She became just the third artist atop the Hot 100 with a holiday song following The Chipmunks song by the Chipmunks with David Saville and Carey’s ‘All I want for Christmas is You.
Leigh also broke Carey’s annual dominance of the Hot 100 during December.
Reports revealed that overall streaming, revenues hit $13.36 billion in 2022, according to Recording Industry Association of America, up from $157 billion in 2015.
