The Maritime Workers Union led by Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, has announced its adherence to the directive from the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress to participate in an indefinite strike starting on Monday, June 3, 2024.
In a statement released on Saturday by the union’s spokesperson, Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna, the union emphasized that the nationwide strike has become essential due to the Federal Government’s unresolved issues concerning the national minimum wage negotiations and the refusal to reverse the steep increase in electricity tariffs.
“In view of the foregoing, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria has directed its members in all ports nationwide, jetties, terminals, oil and gas platforms to effectively ensure the total compliance of the strike as directed by the NLC and TUC.
“This is also to serve as notice to all our concerned stakeholders in the Maritime sector,” the union stated on Saturday.
The two major workers’ unions NLC and had announced an indefinite nationwide strike starting on Monday.
This declaration was made at a press conference in Abuja. Numerous other workers’ unions, including those representing doctors, university lecturers, airport workers, and electricity workers, who are either members or affiliates of the NLC and TUC, are also expected to participate in the strike.
The strike aims to pressure the government into agreeing on a new minimum wage for workers and reviewing the recent increase in electricity prices for consumers.
