Kylian Mbappé made a triumphant return to the pitch after breaking his nose, scoring a crucial penalty for France in their 1-1 draw against Poland at Euro 2024.
Mbappé, showing no signs of hesitation, calmly converted the penalty in the 56th minute, marking his first-ever goal in a European Championship and also becoming the first French player to score at Euro 2024.
Celebrating his goal with a gesture of defiance, Mbappé removed his protective mask, delighting the French fans.
However, despite his heroics, the draw was not enough to secure France the top spot in Group D.
Poland, already eliminated from the tournament, managed to equalize in the 79th minute when Robert Lewandowski converted a penalty after French defender Dayot Upamecano fouled Polish substitute Karol Świderksi.
This was Lewandowski’s second attempt after his initial shot was saved by goalkeeper Mike Maignan, who was penalized for advancing off his line too early.
With this result, France finished second in Group D behind Austria.
They will now face the second-placed team from Group E, which includes Romania, Belgium, Slovakia, and Ukraine, all currently tied on three points.
