UEFA on Thursday announced the names of the top three nominees for the 2022/23 UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award.
The football body announced this through its official website on Thursday.
The nominees are Manchester City forward Erling Haaland, also Manchester City midfielder, Kelvin Debruyne also made the final list, while former Paris Saint Germain player, Lionel Messi will be contending for the prestigious award.
It stated that the award winner will be announced at the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League group stage draw ceremony, which will take place on Thursday 31 August at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco.
The players on the original shortlist were chosen by the UEFA technical study group based on how well they performed for their clubs and national teams in the 2022–23 season.
A jury made up of the managers of the clubs that participated in the group stages of the 2022–23 UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and UEFA Europa Conference League as well as the managers of the men’s national teams of UEFA’s member organisations then chose the top three nominations. The panel also included a group of journalists chosen by the European Sports Media (ESM).
The top three players on the shortlist were to be chosen by coaches and journalists, who gave them five, three, and one points, respectively. The total number of votes cast by the coaches and journalists determined the outcome. Voting for players on their own squad was prohibited for the coaches.
