Mike Tyson experienced a medical emergency during a flight from Miami to Los Angeles on Sunday, according to his representatives.
The 57-year-old former heavyweight champion became nauseous and dizzy, prompting the flight crew to seek assistance from any onboard medical professionals.
Upon arrival in Los Angeles, paramedics boarded the aircraft, which had already been delayed by two hours in Miami due to the heat, to provide Tyson with necessary medical attention.
This incident occurred just two months before Tyson’s scheduled bout against YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Dallas.
His representatives informed The New York Post that “Thankfully, Mr. Tyson is doing great.”
Fellow passengers were asked if there was a doctor available to assist Tyson.
“He became nauseous and dizzy due to an ulcer flare-up 30 minutes before landing. He is appreciative of the medical staff that were there to help him.”
Symptoms of an ulcer flare-up can include nausea, vomiting, bloating, belching, gas pain, chest pain, and fatigue.
Reports revealed the emergency on Monday morning, stating that paramedics boarded the plane after Tyson’s medical issue.
Sources mentioned that the cabin crew made an announcement requesting a doctor’s help 30 minutes before landing, with the message displayed on passengers’ screens.
An eyewitness in an exit row near first class recounted, “They asked us to stay on the plane after landing so paramedics could board. The stewardess said something like, ‘He’s a really important passenger, so we want to make sure he’s OK.’ I suspected it was him and confirmed when I mouthed ‘Mike Tyson’ and the stewardess nodded.”
After landing at LAX, there was a 25-minute delay while paramedics treated Tyson.
Tyson, who has publicly stated he uses marijuana daily, has stopped using the drug while training for his fight against Paul due to it being banned by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. He has also abstained from sex as part of his training regimen.
His publicist, Joann Mignano, told newsmen that, “He only stopped as a means of following all of the rules. But he is still a strong advocate for the medicinal benefits of cannabis for his personal well-being and others like him.”
Tyson’s fight against Paul is set for July 20 at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. The significant age gap between the two fighters has sparked recent criticism.
At a press conference earlier in May, Tyson dismissed the critics, asking, “Who? Name me somebody. You? Who?”
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation has sanctioned the fight as a professional bout, consisting of eight two-minute rounds rather than the usual 10 or 12 three-minute rounds.
Also, the gloves will be heavier, 14 ounces instead of 10, to reduce the power of punches.
Tyson, who retired in 2005, most recently participated in an exhibition match against Roy Jones in November 2020 in California, which was not declared a professional fight.
Tyson appeared unfazed by the commotion and questions, stating, “I was doing this years ago, so this is nothing new to me. This is new to this young boy over here,” referring to his opponent.
