Retired military personnel, frustrated by an 11-month delay in receiving their entitlements, are set to stage a large-scale protest in Abuja on Thursday.
According to The PUNCH, the retirees are demanding immediate action from the Federal Ministry of Finance to address the prolonged issue.
A prominent leader among the pensioners, Col. Innocent Azubuike (retd.), expressed dismay over the hardship caused by the non-payment. Despite securing approval for the funds, the lack of cash-backing has stalled disbursement, leaving the retirees in financial distress.
“We were assured that our entitlements would be paid in November, but now we’re being told there’s no cash-backing,” Azubuike explained.
“This matter lies with the Ministry of Finance, not the Ministry of Defence, and we’ve been left in the dark about when the payments will be made.”
The retirees, many of whom served in various capacities across the country, argue that their demands are justifiable. According to Azubuike, the situation has left many struggling with basic needs.
He said, “We have served this nation diligently, and all we are asking for are the pensions that are rightfully ours. It’s disheartening that we must resort to protests to get what we’ve earned. This country is not too poor to pay us our stipends.”
Preparations for the protest are in high gear, with affected retirees traveling from different parts of the country to join the demonstration. Azubuike revealed that facilities, including mobile toilets and sleeping mats, have been arranged to support participants.
“This time, we are determined to take our fate into our own hands,” he said. “We cannot continue to suffer and die in misery while waiting for what is rightfully ours. The protest will be massive, and we are ready to stay until our voices are heard.”
