Renowned human rights advocate, Femi Falana, SAN, has formally called for a coroner’s inquest to investigate the circumstances surrounding the untimely demise of the celebrated musician, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly recognized as Mohbad.
Punch Metro reported that Mohbad died on Tuesday at the age of 27. The cause of his death has continued to fuel various speculations on social media, especially in light of various viral videos showing the late singer being molested.
The late artist, had previously been associated with Marlian Records, a label presided over by Naira Marley. It was reported in 2022 that Mohbad had parted ways with the record label.
Before his tragic passing, little was publicly known about Mohbad except for his departure from Marlian Records. However, since his demise, revelations from colleagues, fans, and friends have shed light on various unconfirmed accounts, suggesting that the late artist may have faced alleged harassment and bullying leading up to his death.
In response to his passing, the Lagos State Police has initiated an official investigation, while concerned youths and music enthusiasts have taken to the streets in protest of his untimely demise.
In a formal letter addressed to the Chief Coroner of the High Court of Lagos State in Ikeja, Falana expressed deep concern about what he referred to as a “very tragic death.” He cited the Lagos State Coroner’s Law of 2007, specifically Section 15, which stipulates that an inquest should be conducted when a coroner becomes aware of a death within their district that results from violent, unnatural, or suspicious circumstances.
The letter, dated September 18, 2023, and signed and shared on Instagram by Folakemi Falana on behalf of the law company Falana & Associates, highlighted the urgent need for an investigation into Mohbad’s death inside Lagos State.
The letter further read, “We hereby request Your Lordship to conduct an inquest into the circumstances surrounding the tragic death in Lagos State, and we are confident that Your Lordship will accede to our request with utmost urgency.”
