The Federal Executive Council has approved a new National Language Policy, which will see mother tongue a compulsory medium of instruction from Primary 1 to 6.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, in Abuja on Wednesday.
Adamu added that after the first six years of education, the mother tongue would be combined with the English language beginning in junior secondary school 1.
He said that the FG was aware that putting this part of the new NLP into practice would be challenging.
Consequently, even though the policy has been put into effect, the FG will create teaching resources and hire qualified instructors to fully implement it.
The mother tongue to be used in each school, he continued, would depend on which language the host community spoke the most of.
Adamu, who bemoaned the extinction of so many languages, asserted that the FG was steadfast in protecting cultures and their unique quirks.
He asserted that all Nigerian languages are equal and will be treated equally.
