Nigerian internet users expressed dissatisfaction with the sluggish networking performance by network service providers on Thursday.
This comes as users connected internet services provided by the telecommunication companies experience difficulty accessing the internet on their respective devices.
As of the time of filing this report, MTN, Airtel, and others are yet to put out a statement confirming the internet service disruption.
However, this is coming weeks after a major fibre cable cut shut about 87 million MTN users out of calls and data for hours.
“A fiber optic cable cut refers to a complete or partial severing of the thin glass fibers that make up a fiber optic cable. These cables transmit data over long distances using light pulses,” one publication said after the outage on February 28.
TechCabal citing data from the Nigerian Communications Commission reported that the telco industry has had reoccurring issues with fibre cuts and has spent ₦14 billion to fix around 59,000 fibre cuts between 2022 and 2023.
However, taking to social media platforms, such as X on Thursday, February 14, Nigerians shared their frustration regarding the poor network services.
An X user simply identified as @ lifeofNapaul asked in his post the network that is most reliable in Nigeria, “MTN is not reliable, Airtel is not reliable. So which network is reliable in this country?!.”
Another X user with the name, @AmeyawDebrahCurrently, said “only my airtel tigo phone is giving me some sensible internet this morning. If the others are having any downtime, I don’t know. As a customer, no one has told me sh#$ 😟.”
@AfishBowlofwine wrote, “Maybe I’m being harsh, because Airtel is somehow worse. MTN still let’s your voice, no matter how loud, come out as a whisper. There’s still a trace on the Internet that you exist. Airtel is like an opaque vacuum, and you’re blindfolded and hogtied in the middle.,”
@official_Kaysax wrote, “You wan run from MTN come Airtel, be like make you run from Man United go dey support Chelsea.”
@JerrmyofCrpyto wrote, “MTN network, you people will ask God for air conditioner and he will give you people hand fan cos what is all this”.
@SurDavidBent wrote, “No way you can tell me this country isn’t out to destroy one’s sanity. Bad MTN network, Bad Airtel network/ISPs – useless banks.”
@#Abbah_w wrote, “MTN Network why all this nah🤔🤔💔💔 Haba.”
Another user, @Kemma4L asked if others are having the same experience. He wrote, “Who else is experiencing this MTN network whala.”
Reacting to the disruption in February, the Senior Manager, External Relations, MTN Nigeria, Mr. Funso Aina, who tendered the apology in a statement, said, “Our customers have been experiencing challenges connecting to the network due to a major service outage caused by multiple fibre cuts, affecting voice and data services. Our engineers are working hard to resolve with services gradually being restored in some areas. We apologize for the inconvenience and ask for your patience and understanding as the team works to restore full service as soon as possible.”
