The newly installed 46th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Olatunji Owoade, has publicly declared that his emergence as monarch was purely divinely orchestrated, emphasizing he had no prior relationship with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde or former Senator Monsurat Sunmonu.
The monarch made this known during a Thanksgiving service held at the Anglican Cathedral Church in Esiele, Oyo town, on Sunday.
Addressing the congregation, Oba Owoade explained that his ascension to the revered throne was not driven by political influence or personal ambition.
“I never knew nor met both the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde and Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, before and during the process to the throne.
“I never knew I would be the next Alaafin of Oyo, as I was neither desperate nor cutting corners in order to become the Alaafin at all costs. It was the will of God,” he stated.
This was contained in an official statement released on Monday by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, from the state capital, Ibadan.
Oba Owoade also made a call for unity among his people, urging collaboration and peace to achieve collective progress.
“Let us remember that united we stand and divided we fall. In unity lies the strength and togetherness, devoid of bickering and acrimony, we will successfully accomplish the arduous task ahead,” the monarch added.
He further pledged to maintain ethical governance, foster transparent communication, and create a safe and inclusive atmosphere for the people of Oyo.
Delivering the sermon at the Thanksgiving service, former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Supo Ayokunle, urged the monarch to embrace courage and divine direction in facing the responsibilities of his new role.
He highlighted the importance of bravery and resilience in leadership, noting that those traits are necessary to champion justice, liberty, and societal progress.
“Kabiyesi, do not think that you are alone on the throne. Be courageous, steadfast and committed. The almighty God is standing by you and ready to assist you in leading the people aright.
“Be afraid of no one but your God at all times. Call on Him and He will not let you down. Your mission shall surely be accomplished,” Ayokunle said.
Comparing Oba Owoade’s rise to that of biblical King David, the cleric stressed the monarch’s divine assignment to lead Oyo to its promised future. He noted that while challenges would arise, with faith and courage, they would be overcome.
The reverend also called on Oyo indigenes, both within Nigeria and in the diaspora, to rally behind the new Alaafin and let go of past grievances in the interest of unity.
The Thanksgiving was graced by the monarch’s wife, Abiwunmi, members of the Oyo Mesi (traditional council), the Samu, Agba Akin, Baba Iyaji of Oyo, and several dignitaries. A custom-made Holy Bible was presented to the king during the event.
Also present were elevated Baales now recognized as Part 2 traditional rulers, and members of the Owoade royal family.
Oba Owoade received the staff and instrument of office from Governor Makinde on January 13, 2025, and completed the sacred 21-day Oro Ipebi rites on March 29.
