The Nigerian Air Force has reiterated its dedication to the welfare of its veterans in Imo State.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, this commitment was restated by Air Commodore David Bello, Commander of the 211 Quick Response Group, during the 2024 Base Socio-Cultural Activities and Chief of the Air Staff’s Parley in Owerri on Saturday.
Bello expressed gratitude to the veterans for their years of service and assured them of ongoing support and cooperation.
“We are deeply grateful for your sacrifices and unwavering dedication to the nation. Rest assured, your welfare remains a priority for the Nigerian Air Force,” he said.
The commander noted that the event aimed to strengthen civil-military relations, particularly with host communities, while fostering camaraderie between serving officers and retired personnel.
“This parley, initiated by the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, provides a platform for serving officers and veterans to exchange ideas and ensure the overall welfare of our retired personnel. It will be sustained for the benefit of all,” Bello said.
He encouraged veterans to seek medical care at the NAF medical unit, emphasizing the availability of healthcare services.
“Feel free to visit the Air Force medical unit, consult with our doctors and nurses, and receive treatment at any time,” Bello urged.
Commending the officers of the unit for their efforts in combating criminal activities in Imo State, Bello highlighted the significant reduction in separatist activities by the Indigenous People of Biafra.
“Our officers’ resilience has led to a safer environment, with a marked decline in terrorism and criminal activities in the state,” he added.
Veterans at the event praised the initiative, with Martins Oleru speaking on their behalf. He expressed gratitude to the Chief of Air Staff for instituting the veteran parley and urged the leadership to maintain the program.
“We appreciate this initiative, which ensures veterans remain engaged and valued. We encourage its continuation for the benefit of all,” Oleru said.
The event featured traditional music and dance, a tug-of-war contest, culinary displays, and other activities designed to celebrate the unit’s cultural diversity and foster unity among personnel and veterans.
Bello concluded by emphasizing the importance of events like this in fostering morale and cohesion within the armed forces. “As members of the armed forces, while our duty often requires sacrifice, we must also take time to recharge, reconnect, and celebrate our shared bonds,” he said.
