The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control has issued a public alert regarding the circulation of a counterfeit soap labelled “Dettol Health Fresh Soap.”
The fake product, currently being sold in some Nigerian markets, has raised health concerns following a consumer complaint.
According to a statement published on NAFDAC’s website on Thursday, the manufacturer of Dettol products, Reckitt Benckiser Nigeria Limited, confirmed that the soap is not part of their product line. “We do not have any product by the name ‘Dettol Health Fresh Soap,’” the company clarified. This response came after a consumer reported skin irritation caused by the fake soap.
“Dettol Antiseptic products are widely used in Nigeria for household disinfection and personal hygiene to prevent illnesses caused by germs, including bacterial infections,” NAFDAC explained.
The agency warned that the unauthorized sale of such products poses significant health risks, as counterfeit goods lack the necessary safety, quality, and efficacy standards.
NAFDAC has instructed its zonal directors and state coordinators to conduct thorough surveillance and remove counterfeit products from circulation.
“Importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers must remain vigilant to prevent the distribution and use of this fake soap,” the agency cautioned, urging the public to source all medical and hygiene products from authorized suppliers.
“The authenticity and condition of products should be carefully verified before use,” they added.
NAFDAC also called on healthcare professionals and consumers to report any sightings of the counterfeit soap or any adverse reactions linked to its use. Reports can be made via NAFDAC’s hotlines or through the agency’s website and mobile app.
For further information, the agency advised the public to reach out to NAFDAC offices or report incidents through the Med-Safety mobile application, which is available for download on Android and iOS devices.
