The National Assembly has launched an investigation into the alleged brutal execution of members of a vigilante group by Nigerian Army personnel in Eke, Udi Local Government.
Two members of the Eke Vigilante Group, including a lady, were reportedly shot dead and three others were injured after soldiers from the 82nd Division of the Nigerian Army opened fire on them as they responded to a distress call in their town, according to some sources.
The deputy governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ossai, met with the ad hoc committee of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, led by committee chairman Sanni Abdulraheem, who gave Ossai his word that the committee will do everything in its power to find the truth and bring those responsible to justice.
They’re there to investigate the situation and find out what really happened so that justice can be served.
The purpose of their visit with the state’s deputy governor is very clear: to express sympathy for the administration and to brief him on the full scope of their mission.
The deputy explained to the delegate the government’s stake in the matter and the importance of approaching the task with all due diligence.
Because of the state’s unusual position in the region, he also wants the lawmaker to allocate funds towards security.
Following the discussion, the group went to the state legislature to have a public hearing to hear arguments from all sides.
There is nothing more satisfying than bringing the criminals to justice, said the speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, who welcomed the delegation.
The victims and their relatives were comforted by their brief visit to the hospital where they were being treated after the shooting.
