The National Emergency Management Agency has provided food assistance to 611,201 flood victims across 29 states, following a directive from President Bola Tinubu.
According to NEMA, 42,000 metric tonnes of food commodities have been distributed to those affected by the floods.
The announcement was made on Thursday, September 5, during a joint briefing of the Strategic Communications and Inter-agency Policy Committee organized by the office of the National Security Adviser in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, Nigeria Customs Service spokesman, Abdullahi Maiwada, disclosed that the floods have claimed 201 lives, left 2,119 injured, and caused extensive damage to properties and farmlands.
“The flood has impacted 29 states, 154 local government areas, and displaced 225,169 individuals. A total of 611,201 people have been affected, with 83,457 houses damaged and 115,265 hectares of farmland affected,” Maiwada said.
In response to the disaster, NEMA is leading efforts to coordinate relief interventions, with a focus on ensuring vulnerable Nigerians across the affected regions receive the necessary support.
President Tinubu had earlier directed the distribution of relief materials to vulnerable citizens in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, as part of the government’s response to the ongoing flood crisis.
