Newcastle United have reportedly reignited their pursuit of Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen as they aim to secure a new center-back before the summer transfer window shuts.
The Magpies have faced frustration in their attempts to sign Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, with four bids turned down, the latest being a £60 million offer with an additional £5 million in add-ons.
This has left manager Eddie Howe uncertain about the prospects of finalizing a deal for the England international.
In light of this, Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah has emerged as a possible alternative, but reports from Mundo Deportivo indicated that Newcastle are now revisiting the option of bringing in Christensen.
Earlier this summer, Newcastle had shown interest in the Danish international but decided to explore other options after concluding that a deal would likely be unattainable.
However, their interest has been reignited following Christensen’s exclusion from Barcelona’s starting lineup in their La Liga opener against Valencia.
Under the guidance of new manager Hansi Flick, Inigo Martinez was preferred alongside Pau Cubarsi in defense, while youngsters Marc Bernal and Marc Casado were deployed in central midfield, despite reports hinting that the 28-year-old Christensen could be used in a more advanced role under Flick.
Christensen’s omission is particularly notable given that many of his defensive peers are currently sidelined with injuries.
Barcelona still have key players like Ronald Araujo, Frenkie de Jong, and Gavi to return, which further complicates Christensen’s prospects for regular minutes.
Christensen, who joined Barcelona on a free transfer from Chelsea two years ago, could represent a significant profit for the financially constrained Catalan club should they decide to sell him.
Offloading his salary would also provide much-needed financial relief.
However, it remains uncertain whether Christensen himself is inclined to leave or if he would be interested in a move to Newcastle at this stage.
The transfer window for both the Premier League and La Liga is set to close on August 30, leaving Newcastle with limited time to finalize any potential deals.
