The Nigeria Football Federation has appointed the former U17 World Cup-winning coach, Manu Garba, as the new Head Coach of the Nigeria U17 boys, Golden Eaglets.
The NFF announced his appointment in a statement posted on its website on Friday.
“The former Nigeria international will now immediately resume the role and take charge of the team’s preparations for next month’s WAFU B U17 Championship, taking place in Ghana,” the statement read.
This is the second time Manu Garba was named the head coach of the Under-17 team.
Garba, who previously led the Golden Eaglets to victory in the FIFA U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates in 2013, returns to the role with a wealth of experience and success. Under his guidance, the team secured Nigeria’s fourth triumph at the U17 level.
Notable talents who were in Garba’s squad during his tenure in 2013, included Kelechi Iheanacho, Taiwo Awoniyi, Isaac Success, Musa Mohammed, Chidiebere Nwakali, and goalkeeper Dele Alampasu.
The team’s remarkable journey to victory saw them emerge as runners-up at the African U17 Championship in Morocco, followed by a dominant performance in the FIFA U17 World Cup.
Their impressive victories include a memorable 6-1 win over Mexico in the opening game and a convincing 3-0 victory over Sweden in the semi-finals, before before they dislodged Mexico by the same margin in the final to lift the trophy.
Garba will now immediately resume to lead the Golden Eaglets as they prepare for the upcoming WAFU B U17 Championship, set to take place in Ghana next month.
