The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has issued a 48-hour heavy rainfall forecast for 25 states in the country, including the Federal Capital Territory.
This alert, released in NiMet’s weekly heavy rainfall forecast bulletin on Wednesday, warns residents to prepare for heavy downpours and possible flash floods.
The affected states include Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Plateau, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Niger, Nasarawa, Kogi, Enugu, Delta, Bayelsa, Abia, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ebonyi, Kwara, and Benue.
NiMet advises residents in these areas to take necessary precautions and stay updated on weather updates during this period to ensure their safety and minimize potential damage caused by the heavy rainfall and flash floods.
The agency said other parts of the country will experience light to moderate rainfall.
On the likely impact of the rains, NiMet warned: “The expected moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to cause some flash flooding over their areas of occurrence.
“Strong winds should accompany the rains with the strongest winds expected over parts of Adamawa, Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kebbi State.”
Residents were warned against travelling through surface runoff waters because they contain strong undercurrents.
It identified slick roads and diminished visibility as additional dangers that may be provoked by the downpour.
