At least nine people were killed and four others injured when a car struck pedestrians waiting at a traffic signal in central Seoul in South Korea on Monday, police said.

The passenger car, traveling in the wrong direction, collided with two other vehicles before hitting the pedestrians, as reported by local media.
The driver, a man in his late 60s, claimed a sudden, unintended acceleration led to the crash. He has since been detained, although Seoul police have yet to confirm these reports.
Emergency officer Kim Chun-su stated in a briefing that one of the injured individuals is in critical condition.
