The National Film and Video Censors Board has revealed that it received and categorized 274 movies produced by the Nigerian film industry in the first quarter of 2024.
The Executive Director/CEO of the board, Shaibu Husseini, disclosed this in a statement on Monday in Abuja.
Husseini stated that the figure was provided by the Department of Film Censorship and Classification of the board in its first-quarter report, encompassing all genres of films approved by the board.
The report will be submitted to the relevant federal government agency as input for the compilation of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product for the first quarter of 2024.
The report highlights that films in English Language constituted the majority of the films produced during the period under review.
Out of the total number of films verified and approved, 250 were produced in English, while others included films in Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, and Hindi languages.
Regarding classification by viewing audience, films classified as ’18’, meant for matured audiences, constituted over 50 per cent of the total films produced.
The report also indicated that films classified as ’15’, ’12’, those requiring Parental Guidance, and those under ‘General viewing’ followed accordingly in terms of production numbers.
The NFVCB is a Federal Government agency responsible for regulating the film and video industry in Nigeria.
It is empowered by law to classify all films and videos, whether imported or produced locally, and to register all film and video outlets across the country, among other functions.
