The Police Service Commission, in partnership with the Nigeria Police Force, has officially initiated the recruitment of qualified and enthusiastic Nigerians into the force as constables (recruits).
According to The PUNCH, this development marks the culmination of a four-year-long legal battle between the PSC and the NPF over who should oversee the recruitment process.
The dispute was sparked by former President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval to recruit 10,000 police constables annually for a six-year period.
In July 2023, the Supreme Court rendered its verdict in favor of the PSC, granting it sole authority to conduct the recruitment of constables for the Nigeria Police Force.
Following this legal resolution, the Chairman of the PSC, Solomon Arase, addressed any lingering concerns during his inauguration in April 2023.
He assured that there would be no further rift between the commission and the Nigeria Police Force regarding the recruitment of police constables into the force.
Chairing the PSC, Onyemuche Nnamani, the Commissioner representing the South-East Zone, and Olabode Akinbamilowo, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, serving as the Secretary, further solidified the board’s composition during the inauguration at the commission’s headquarters.
In a public notice published on Friday, the PSC officially announced the commencement of the recruitment process for individuals who meet the qualifications to join the rank of Police Constables in the General Duty and Specialist Cadres.
The acting Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, issued a resounding call to all potential applicants, urging them to exercise diligence and care throughout the application process.
The official bulletin, signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumiyiwa Adejobi, stated, “The Police Recruitment Board is set to open the application portal on October 15, 2023, marking the beginning of an essential phase in enhancing the Force’s capabilities and effectiveness.
