The National Universities Commission on Monday, issued a statement advising universities to ensure the safety of students and staff in light of upcoming nationwide protests.
According to Channels, the directive, signed by acting Executive Secretary Chris Maiyaki, was addressed to the Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian universities.
It emphasized the government’s concern for safety despite acknowledging the right to peaceful protest.
“The Honourable Minister of Education has directed that Vice-Chancellors of all Nigerian Universities be formally alerted to plans by unknown groups to organize nationwide protests.
The Federal Government recognizes the right of peaceful protest but is particularly concerned about the safety of staff, students, and university property,” the statement read.
The directive urged Vice-Chancellors to take proactive measures to secure their campuses and issue statements reassuring their communities of their safety.
It also recommended that students stay on campus and focus on their academic work to avoid potential dangers during the protests.
The advisory follows the announcement of a nationwide protest scheduled for August 1 to 10, 2024, which has gained significant traction on social media under the hashtag #EndBadGovernance.
Both the presidency and police authorities have called for the protests to be canceled.
