The National Youth Service Corps has announced the opening of its portal for registration between Wednesday, May 8th, and Monday, May 13th, 2024.
This registration is specifically for remobilizing corps members who previously absconded from the service.
NYSC made this announcement via its official Facebook handle, highlighting that remobilization offers a second chance for corps members who did not complete their service year during their initial mobilization for national service.
The scheme has urged all affected corps members to take advantage of this opportunity and register for the mandatory national service.
“Portal will be opened for Remobilisation from 8th to 13th May, 2024.
“NYSC Remobilisation is for those who started National Service and absconded,” NYSC said.
There have been several reports of corps members absconding from their duties across Nigeria. In February 2022, the Ondo State Coordinator of the NYSC, Victoria Ani, disclosed that 18 corps members serving in the state were punished for violating the rules and regulations of the corps.
Nine of them were to repeat the service year for absconding, while the other nine would have their service extended for alleged acts contrary to the rules.
Similarly, in May 2023, the Gombe State NYSC Coordinator, Mr. Dawut Jidda, announced that three corps members who absconded from their duty posts would repeat the service year, while two others would get a service extension out of the 526 who passed out in Gombe State.
In April 2022, seven states across the country including Anambra, Enugu, Plateau, Akwa Ibom, Gombe, Nasarawa, and Delta, reported that 208 NYSC members violated service rules and were punished with service extension or outright repeat of the service year.
These cases highlight the seriousness with which the NYSC treats cases of abscondment.
