The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has congratulated the Nigerian students who made the country proud by winning the 2023 international debate championship in Malaysia.
The team, which represented Team Nigeria at the championship, defeated Team Malaysia 1, represented by Pin Hwa High School 3-0 by unanimous decision at the semi-finals before reaching the final.
The team thereafter defeated their counterparts from the Hin Hua High School Debate team in the finals, beating them 2-1 to emerge overall winners of the competition, which ended early on Thursday.
The Anambra State debate team which represented Team Nigeria at the competition, comprised of pupils who were drawn from various secondary schools across Anambra.
A pupil of St. Michael’s Model Comprehensive Secondary School, Nimo in Njikoka LGA, Promise Mbachu, emerged as the Best Speaker of the Debate Round.
The former Anambra State Governor expressed joy over the victory in a statement issued via his X handle on Friday, stating that some educational reforms and investments that was made under his watch as governor of the state are still bearing great fruits for the state and the nation in general.
He also thanked the successive government for upholding the standards he left behind.
He wrote, “I heartily congratulate Nigerian Students, Nigeria Debate Team, who just emerged as champions of the 2023 International Debate Championship in Malaysia.
“I hail them for their intellectual sagacity and commitment to education which led them thus far and stood them proudly on the global stage as champions and victorious ambassadors of excellence.
“Reports have it that Nigeria was represented by Team Anambra which comprised students from three schools: St. Michael’s Model Comprehensive Secondary School, Nimo; All Hallows Seminary Onitsha; Mater Amabilis, Umuoji – which are among the mission schools that I handed back to their original owners when I was the Governor of Anambra State. This corroborates my ever-consistent message that ‘education is the best investment any government can make for its citizens’.
“I am glad to see that some educational reforms and investments that we made under my watch in Anambra are still bearing great fruits for the State and the nation in general. I thank the schools’ management and their teachers for their invaluable efforts in giving the students quality education.
“I also appreciate the successive governors of Anambra State for sustaining the high educational standards of the State. As we revolutionized education in Anambra, we plan to do the same in Nigeria as a whole for the benefit of our children and the greater glory of our nation.
