A Magistrates Court sitting in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Friday ordered the remand of Rahmat Abdulateef, a 32-year-old woman, for allegedly staging her own kidnapping to extort money from her husband.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the court did not take Abdulateef’s plea as she was brought on a one-count charge of self-kidnapping.
The police counsel, Inspector Adekunle Opayemi, informed the court that Abdulateef committed the offence on June 20 at around 2:42 p.m. on Elite Road in Abeokuta.
Opayemi explained that the defendant orchestrated her own abduction to demand ransom from her husband, Mr. Ogunbummi Lateef.
He noted that this act violated Section 27 of the Ogun 2016 law on the Prohibition of forcible occupation of landed properties, armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism, and other anti-violence and related offences.
Magistrate O.O. Odumosun directed that Abdulateef be held in prison for 60 days while awaiting legal advice from the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP). The case was adjourned to September 19 for further mention.
