Manchester United goalkeeper,André Onana, has been excluded from the squad for today’s Premier League clash against Newcastle United, following what has been described as a challenging week for the Cameroonian shot-stopper.
In his absence, summer signing Altay Bayındır is poised to make his long-awaited Premier League debut.
Transfer insider, Fabrizio Romano, revealed that Onana was informed of the decision by manager Rúben Amorim in the aftermath of United’s UEFA Europa League encounter with Olympique Lyon. Amorim reportedly advised the 28-year-old to take some time off to mentally recuperate.
“André Onana won’t even be on the bench for Man United today as Rúben Amorim wanted him to disconnect from football after a difficult week,” Romano stated on Sunday via X.
The goalkeeper is expected to rejoin the squad in time for the second leg of the Europa League tie later this week.
Meanwhile, The Guardian’s Jamie Jackson corroborated the news of Onana’s omission, confirming that the former Inter Milan star did not travel with the team to St James’ Park.
In his place, Turkish international Bayındır has been handed a golden opportunity to prove his worth, as he steps into the spotlight for his first-ever Premier League appearance.
