A monarch in Ayede, Odo-Ala, in Akure North Local Council of Ondo State, Oba Bakare Jimoh, has called government at all levels to invest in preservation of cultural heritage which would safeguard the identities of various communities and also create opportunities for tourism, economic growth, and international collaborations.
Oba Bakare made the call during the celebration of Ifa festival, along with two other deities, which also coincided with his birthday, in the community. The festival served as a platform to showcase the rich cultural traditions and customs of Ayede.
While wondering over the declinatory interest among younger generation in embracing the cultural heritage and values of their forebears, the monarch identified the significance of cultural preservation, urging the government at all levels to provide support to traditional rulers in uplifting and preserving the diverse cultures of various communities.
The traditional ruler reasoned that by investing in preservation of cultural heritage, governments would not only safeguard the identities of various communities but also create opportunities for tourism, economic growth, and international collaborations.
The Ondo monarch who was worried over lack of enthusiasm by the younger generation, maintained the need for youths to understand and appreciate historical significance and uniqueness of their cultural heritage.
He stated further that preservation of cultural traditions is not only crucial for maintaining a sense of identity but also for promoting unity and fostering pride among community members.
He explained the growing interest shown by foreigners in participating in and celebrating various African cultures and festivals, describing the interest as a testament to the exceptional nature of African heritage.
The traditional ruler called on the youth to actively involved in cultural activities, festivals and traditional practices, stressing that these were essential to passing down ancestral knowledge and wisdom to the next generation.
