Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have detained Prophetess Folashade Kikiowo Adekola, a mission attendant, following the death of a pregnant woman, Jumoke Adesuwa, who suffered fatal complications during childbirth in Akure, Ondo State.
Prophetess Adekola, the spiritual head of Christ Engracing Deliverance Ministry, located off Ilupeju Street in Oke-Aro, Akure, was performing the delivery when both mother and child died.
Jumoke, 28, had reportedly left her home without informing her husband, Ayodele Adesuwa, intending to undergo “spiritual cleansing” for a safe delivery.
She remained at the church for several days before the delivery.
The Prophetess encountered difficulties during the delivery, resulting in the baby’s death shortly after birth, and Jumoke suffered severe hemorrhaging.
Upon learning of the incident, the deceased’s brother reported the matter to the Oke-Aro Police Station, leading to the prophetess’s arrest.
According to family members, Ayodele had given Jumoke funds to register at a government hospital for professional care. However, he was unaware she had chosen to pursue spiritual assistance instead.
A family source recounted the events, saying, “The husband of the deceased came from the farm in Idanre after being away for five days and did not know the whereabouts of his wife, but the neighbours told him the woman had been in church for some time.”
The source continued, explaining that someone from the church had called Ayodele to inform him of the birth.
He contacted a family member, and together they went to the church, only to discover that the newborn had died. “On sighting the deceased, we saw her in her pool of blood, bleeding profusely,” the family source explained. “So, we rushed her to a nearby hospital.”
The family revealed that multiple hospitals refused to admit Jumoke due to her critical state before one eventually accepted her. Sadly, despite efforts to save her, she passed away within hours of arrival.
Returning to the church to collect the baby’s remains, the family was disturbed to find the newborn’s body in a room that appeared unsanitary and far from suitable as a delivery area
“The condition of the room was very worrisome, as it does not look like a delivery room,” the family member noted.
The Ondo State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, confirmed the prophetess’s arrest and stated that both mother and child had died in the delivery process.
“The case was reported by the brother of the deceased while the investigation is still ongoing,” the PPRO said.
Jumoke’s body has been moved to the mortuary, while the investigation continues to uncover the details surrounding this tragic incident.
