A few hours before the scheduled #EndBadGovernance protest in Nigeria, organizers in Ondo State have withdrawn, citing concerns that the event could be turned into an ethnic conflict.
The group, known as Concerned Revolutionary Youths, explained that the protest had already accomplished some of its goals.
Consequently, they saw no need to risk potential chaos or violence.
The demonstration, initially planned for August 1, aimed to provide Nigerians a platform to voice their discontent with the current economic hardships.
At a press conference held at the NUJ Press Centre in Akure, the state capital, the group’s State Secretary, Ogundipe Seyi Olaniyi, revealed that influential figures in the state had advocated for the protest to be canceled.
Ogundipe assured that the decision was not a result of financial inducement or intimidation.
“The planned protest has already achieved some of its aims as President Ahmed Bola Tinubu has taken some proactive measures to address many of the issues raised by the organisers,” Ogundipe stated.
He also mentioned that the group had communicated their decision to withdraw to their counterparts nationwide and expressed their intention to continue engaging in dialogue with the government on the pressing issues facing Nigerians.
The group had equally informed security agencies and relevant authorities about their decision to abstain from the protest.
