One pedestrian has been confirmed dead and two others injured following a fatal road accident involving a container-laden truck along Cele Expressway, inward Oshodi in Lagos.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday, revealing that the crash involved a 40-foot articulated truck, five commercial buses, and two private vehicles—identified as a Toyota Camry and a Sienna minivan.
According to LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the articulated truck, which was transporting two large containers, reportedly experienced brake failure while speeding, resulting in the driver losing control of the vehicle.
“The dislodged containers fell onto several vehicles, including five commercial buses and two private cars, causing extensive damage and leading to the tragic loss of life,” Bakare-Oki said.
He added that the deceased was a pedestrian who was struck during the incident, while two other individuals suffered varying degrees of injuries.
“One of the bus drivers sustained serious injuries, including multiple compound fractures in his arm and leg. The victims were immediately taken to Isolo General Hospital by the Lagos State Ambulance Service for urgent medical care,” he stated.
Bakare-Oki praised the quick response from LASTMA officials and other emergency units including the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and local residents who assisted in the rescue operation.
“Our officers, alongside other emergency responders and supportive members of the public, ensured swift rescue efforts and helped restore traffic flow on the expressway,” he said.
He also confirmed that personnel from the Ijesha-Tedo Police Division were deployed to maintain law and order during the incident.
Offering his condolences, Bakare-Oki said, “We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased and wish the injured individuals a speedy recovery.”
He called on motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits and traffic laws, noting that an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the accident and to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
“We urge members of the public to report any traffic-related issues through our toll-free emergency line: 080000527862,” Bakare-Oki concluded.
